Bethesda celebrates 25 years of Elder Scrolls by giving Morrowind away
Despite the fact that saying a game came out “a quarter of a century” ago turns my body into dust, it has been precisely that long since Bethesda started the popular Elder Scrolls franchise. To celebrate, they are letting fans old and new download a free copy of Morrowind, the series’ third entry, through Bethesda’s online storefront.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Log into Bethesda.net (or create a new account)
- Redeem the code “TES25TH-MORROWIND” in the store
- Presto! The game has been added to your account.
If you haven’t played sprawling open-world RPG Morrowind, this is the best excuse yet to experience the game that created the blueprint on which Oblivion and Skyrim would build. The graphics may look cartoonishly out of date, but the quest design, dialogue and worldbuilding showcases the best of Bethesda’s creative talent. (Plus, the modding community is alive and well, providing all manner of additions and enhancement.)
Morrowind is the first 3D RPG I can remember playing, and the sheer scope of possibilities floored me. I created a Nord who wielded both steel and magic, though was proficient at neither. I ran out of stamina, maxed out my jump, died to a Cliff Racer and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I heartily recommend downloading the game today and doing the same.
UPDATE: Bethesda have extended the giveaway through this weekend!
